Together with the Chatham Education Foundation, our team at BOLD and a whole host of other community volunteers collected, sorted and distributed over 14,000 books for Books on Break this month.
Executive Director Jaime Detzi said the events were amazing! "We hosted Books on Break at five schools, and the BOLD employees and other volunteers were the reason for our success. We actually can not pull off this program without volunteers since CEF has a staff of only three part-time employees!"
The Books on Break program is provided to our most economically disadvantaged schools throughout Chatham County. The schools are chosen by the administration. We work closely with school staff to set up a free book fair for the selected schools. The students then shop the fair and self-select books that they get to keep to begin a home library or build on their current one. By providing these books, the goal is to help students fall in love with reading, which is the foundation for all education.
Students verbally agree to read at least 20 minutes per day over the summer. Doing so helps decrease the summer slide that happens every year when students are on break. Head to their website to learn more about the Chatham Education Foundation and how you can give back.
